Formulas

CTR = clicks / impressions x 100

CPC = cost / clicks · CPM = cost / impressions x 1,000

What is click-through rate?

Click-through rate (CTR) is the share of people who clicked after seeing something: an ad, a search result, a link in an email, a banner. It tells you how well the message and the offer earn the click. A CTR of 2% means 2 out of every 100 impressions turned into a click.

How to calculate CTR

The formula is: CTR = clicks / impressions × 100.

Example: an ad was shown 5,000 times and got 120 clicks. 120 / 5,000 = 0.024, times 100 is a CTR of 2.4%.

Use clicks and impressions from the same place and time range. For email, many tools report clicks per email delivered; some report clicks per email opened, which gives a much higher number. Say which one you use when you compare.

CTR, CPC and CPM

If you pay for ads, CTR connects the two common prices. CPC (cost per click) = cost / clicks. CPM (cost per 1,000 impressions) = cost / impressions × 1,000. At the same CPM, a higher CTR means a lower CPC, because the same impressions bring more clicks.

After the click

CTR stops at the click. What matters next is how many of those visitors sign up or buy, which is your conversion rate. For paid traffic, put both together with the ROAS calculator to see whether the ads pay for themselves. Tag your links with the UTM builderso you can see each campaign's results in your analytics.

FAQ

How do you calculate CTR?

Divide clicks by impressions and multiply by 100. 120 clicks from 5,000 impressions is a CTR of 2.4%.

What is the difference between CTR and conversion rate?

CTR measures how many people who saw an ad, email or search result clicked it. Conversion rate measures how many of the people who arrived then signed up or bought. A high CTR with a low conversion rate usually points to the landing page.

How are CPC and CPM calculated?

CPC (cost per click) is ad cost divided by clicks. CPM (cost per mille) is ad cost divided by impressions, times 1,000.
