What a UTM builder does

A UTM builder adds tracking tags to the end of a URL. Analytics tools read those tags when someone arrives through the link, so you can see which newsletter, ad or post sent each visitor. Without them, many visits from emails, apps and messaging tools show up as “direct” traffic with no source at all.

The five UTM parameters

  • utm_source: where the traffic comes from, such as google, newsletter or linkedin.
  • utm_medium: the type of channel, such as cpc, email or social.
  • utm_campaign: the campaign or promotion, such as spring_sale or product_launch.
  • utm_term: optional, the paid search keyword.
  • utm_content: optional, to tell apart two links or ads in the same campaign, such as header_link and footer_link.

UTM naming tips

  • Use lowercase. UTM values are case-sensitive in most analytics tools, so Email and email split into two rows.
  • Use underscores or dashes instead of spaces.
  • Pick one name per channel and keep it: always “email”, never sometimes “e-mail”.
  • Write your names down in a shared sheet so everyone on the team tags links the same way.

From tagged links to revenue

UTM tags tell you where visitors came from. The next question is which campaigns brought signups and sales. Compare clicks with the CTR calculator, check whether paid campaigns pay off with the ROAS calculator, and track revenue by campaign in your analytics.

FAQ

What are UTM parameters?

UTM parameters are tags you add to the end of a link, such as ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=spring_sale. When someone clicks the link, your analytics tool reads the tags and credits the visit to that source, medium and campaign.

Which UTM parameters are required?

Use at least utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. utm_term (the paid search keyword) and utm_content (to tell apart two ads or links in the same campaign) are optional.

Should I use UTM tags on internal links?

No. A UTM link on your own site can start a new session and replace the visitor's real source, such as the search engine or ad that first brought them. Use UTM tags only on links that point to your site from somewhere else.
